Explanation

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) is a defence and strategic policy think tank based in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, founded by the Australian government and partly funded by the Australian Department of Defence as well as the United States Department of State and military contractors. Established in 2001 under Prime Minister John Howard to provide "policy-relevant research and analysis to better inform Government decisions and public understanding of strategic and defence issues", ASPI has been described in the Australian Financial Review, iTnews and The Diplomat as being one of Australia`s most influential national security policy think tanks.

In recent years, ASPI has adopted a markedly anti-China posture, leading to increasing criticism. In February 2020, Australian Labor Party Senator Kim Carr described ASPI as "hawks intent on fighting a new cold war" and criticised it for accepting nearly $450,000 from the US State Department to track Chinese government research collaborations with Australian universities. Former Foreign Minister and former Premier of New South Wales Bob Carr has said the ASPI provides a "one-sided, pro-American view of the world". ASPI has also been criticised by John Menadue, Geoff Raby and Jordan Shanks.

Despite clear links to arms manufacturers, with great potential for conflicts of interest, western media has quoted ASPI prolifically, especially in relation to allegations of genocide in Xinjiang.
