At a time when academic institutions are drastically reducing staffing and programs, academics find themselves with precarious tenure. Under pressure to publish, many have become stridently anti-China authors of 'dramatic' books. Others join think tanks to secure better tenure. The list below is not exhaustive but is a sampling of those academics who publish, in whatever media, anti-China writings and those who attempt to balance the propaganda with alternative perspectives.

Some academics claim expertise in Chinese economic and political affairs, yet their accreditation does not confirm this. An example of such is Adrian Zenz, who writes prolifically on China, yet only has recognised qualifications in Theology.
