  • The Invention of China Debate: Carl Zha vs Bill HaytonCarl Zha | talks to author of new book `The Invention of China`. Carl pushes back on the idea that China is a recent construction by arguing the idea of China have always evolved over time and there is a clear continuity down thru the ages.

Bill Hayton was former BBC journalist reporting from Vietnam and Southeast Asia and wrote `The South China Sea: The Struggle for Power in Asia`, on topic of invention of `Han Race`, Chinese language, territory, Chinese nationalism, and China itself. Hayton argues in his new book that China, the country we know today ` a nation with borders, citizens and national interests` is a relatively recent concept, dating from a period straddling the turn of the 20th century. Prior to that, China was not and did not consider itself `a country` but rather the `Qing Great-State`.

Chinese government | Alleged foreign influence in Australia

  • Borrowing mouths to speak on Xinjiang (Ariel Bogle, Nathan Ruser, Albert Zhang and Daria Impiombato)This report explores how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) uses foreign social media influencers to shape and push messages domestically and internationally about Xinjiang that are aligned with its own preferred narratives.

In short, ASPI, in this report, endeavours to prove that the CPC uses foreign influencers to produce propaganda that assists their narrative. They assert that these influencers have penetration in international arenas - "extraterritorial projection of the CCP`s political power". This aligns with an on-going theme from ASPI that alleges attempts by China at `foreign influence`.

  • The architecture of repression: Unpacking Xinjiang`s governanceBy examining the Chinese party-state`s governance methods, this report purports to illustrate how human rights abuses are being carried out in Xinjiang and by whom. It claims mass campaigns aimed at political realignment are not artefacts of a bygone era. It also claims they are occurring at a time when Chinese society is more tightly connected with the world than ever before and pursued along racial and religious lines in Xinjiang with profound social impacts.

  • The Karakax List: Dissecting the Anatomy of Beijing’s Internment Drive in XinjiangThe “Karakax List”, named after the county of Karakax (Qaraqash) in Hotan Prefecture, represents the most recent leaked government document from Xinjiang. Over 137 pages, 667 data rows and the personal details of over 3,000 Uyghurs, this remarkable document presents the strongest evidence to date that Beijing is actively persecuting and punishing normal practices of traditional religious beliefs, in direct violation of its own constitution.

  • Thoroughly reforming them towards a healthy heart attitude: China`s political re-education campaign in XinjiangZenz describes this as:
Since spring 2017, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China has witnessed the emergence of an unprecedented re-education campaign. According to media and informant reports, untold thousands of Uyghurs and other Muslims have been and are being detained in clandestine political re-education facilities, with major implications for society, local economies and ethnic relations.

Considering that the Chinese state is currently denying the very existence of these facilities, this paper investigates publicly available evidence from official sources, including government websites, media reports and other Chinese internet sources.

First, it briefly charts the history and present context of political re-education. Second, it looks at the recent evolution of re-education in Xinjiang in the context of `de-extremification` work. Finally, it evaluates detailed empirical evidence pertaining to the present re-education drive. With Xinjiang as the `core hub` of the Belt and Road Initiative, Beijing appears determined to pursue a definitive solution to the Uyghur question.

Claims regarding Xinjiang re-education centres based on media and personal testimony of Uyghur activists.

  • Marles pushes ‘China threat’, advocates ability to attack Chinese territoryDefence minister Richard Marles has a dangerous habit of relying on unfounded assertions to decide that Australia must not only increase military spending on a vast scale but have the ability to attack China from close to its homeland.

Brian Toohey critiques the approach taken by Richard Marles, who essentially repeats the US narratives regarding China and, in doing so, places Australia in a position where it may, once again, follow the US into a conflict.
