East Turkestan is a loosely-defined geographical and historical region in East Asia, that varies in meaning by context and usage. "East Turkestan", a term of Russian origin, asserts a continuity with a "West Turkestan" or the now-independent states of Soviet Central Asia. Historically, Xinjiang has constituted an independent "East Turkestan", though various non-Chinese regimes controlled the region at times prior to the 1750s.
