In response to their obligations to several UN resolutions, China has actively encouraged women to control their fertility as they see fit, often in conflict with local constraints on the freedom of women. This led to an absurd claim that China was deliberately imposing sterilisation without consent, a claim never proven. Correlative data related to the uptake of mechanism for fertility control, including sterilisation, and population and demographic trends, was used to conclude that forced sterilisation was occurring.
